Treat your torque wrench right, and you won’t screw yourself over. I needed to torque two banjo bols for the oil cooler lines for the turbo to the oil filter bracket at 41ft-lbs. One is above 41 and not broken, the other one is above.

Kinja'd!!!

I never knew how to maintain a torque wrench until it was too late and this accounts for the many times I’ve sheared heads off bolts and such. I never set it back to 0 after I was done using it. Unfortunately, Porsche doesn’t stock this anymore. FORTUNATELY, Bel-Metric does, at around $16 a bolt. Factor in $23 for a new and calibrated torque wrench and you’ve got my lesson of the day. I’m gonna treat this new wrench like a god.

So, uh, for the less informed what is the proper way to treat a torque wrench?

Don’t drop it either.

On a side note. A buddy of mine ruined a new set of tires at a track day due to a bad snap on air gauge.

Dont drop it, dont bang it around, once your done using it set the spec back to zero to take tension off of the mechanism and maintain an accurate reading

I switched to the click beam a while back. At the top of the handle left side there is a little wheel covered by a little metal lever (lever just prevents you from inadvertently changing the torque ). You turn it to adjust the dial and thats it. I have two one for small stuff up to 50lb and one 50-240 lbs. They are decently accurate and have no memory so you don’t have to reset to zero before storage. I am still cautious and a will put it to a low setting and will have it click a couple of times on a secure bolt like a lug nut or shock tower before doing anything sensitive.

I get my tires at Costco and they have a calibrator they use before final tightening. I wonder if they will let me check to see how accurate my tools are?

I thought those wrenches still direct you to reset them back to the lowest setting when your finished?

I’m just glad the extraction was simple as heck. I wouldn’t be nearly as calm and relieved about this as I am now.

I’ve never sheared a banjo bolt before, but I’ve felt weak threads and a sense of pucker before...

In a way I envy you because you’re actually learning something with your money spent this week. I’ve had to replace a starter, replace a battery that ran down because of a trunk light staying on, and buy a muffler bracket. Total spent: about $230. Total learned: zip.

I use a regular click-type. A friend of mine has a digital one and its super cool.

That raised my pulse a bit. Double checked, Precision Instruments C series (the Click Beam ones) do not use an internal spring so  no need to be reset after use. They were not cheap but not Snap on pricey for something that should last a long time.

Oops, didn’t know that.   Mine’s probably been sitting at near max since I put snow tires on.

I also learnt not to buy cheapo torque wrenchs. My $40 tekton broke some racheting teeth the other day. It still works, but it had me paranoid. Now I has a CDI and peace of mind. And no monies in my account :)

I’ve never had a problem with cheap torque wrenches or tools in general. I’m sure quality goes up with more $$$ but I’m happy to use a cheap wrench if it’s taken care of. I did not take care of my first one which led to the above situation. But damn did it last three abusive years.

I did everything what it told me to do, never dropped it, no oil on it, stored it on zero setting and kept it in my room not the unheated garage. I guess I just got a defective piece.

I would be afraid of a $23 torque wrench. The sort of thing I actually use a torque wrench on is the sort of thing I will not cheap out on. I very much like my CDIs.
